Silk for skin problems

Skin problems such as acne and eczema are quite common and can be very unpleasant to deal with on a daily basis. To relieve the itching and irritation they cause, dermatologists and beauty experts recommend using silk.

What are acne and eczema?

Acne

Acne is a condition that primarily affects teenagers, but can also affect some adults. It manifests as pimples caused by an overproduction of sebum (an oily substance that helps protect the skin). It generally affects skin that tends to be oily. However, dry skin can also be prone to acne due to hormonal imbalances, environmental stressors (such as pollution), or an unhealthy lifestyle.

Eczema

Eczema, on the other hand, is a skin condition linked to allergies, stress, irritants, etc. It is characterized by skin inflammation accompanied by redness, dryness, and severe itching. The more you scratch, the more you risk worsening your condition, as bacteria can more easily penetrate the skin.

In both cases, aggravating factors include skin dehydration and skin damage (caused by squeezing pimples in the case of acne and by scratching in the case of eczema).

How does silk help relieve skin problems?

1. Silk is hygienic

Did you know that a pillowcase is a veritable breeding ground for bacteria? Dead skin cells, dust, and even dust mites accumulate on your pillowcases—even if you make sure to wash up before going to bed. That’s why it’s recommended to wash your pillowcase at least once a week!
Silk, however, is a naturally hypoallergenic, antibacterial, and anti-dust-mite material. It traps fewer impurities than a cotton pillowcase, for example. What’s more, a silk pillowcase only needs to be washed once or twice a month. That makes all the difference!

2. Silk Reduces Dehydration

As we’ve seen, dehydration exacerbates skin imperfections. During the day, you drink water regularly and apply moisturizers, but at night, while you sleep, you can’t nourish your skin the way you do during the day. The good news is that silk is a hydrophobic fabric, meaning it doesn’t absorb moisture from your skin. This makes it the perfect fabric for keeping your skin hydrated all night long.

3. Silk helps skincare products work more effectively

To treat your skin concerns, you usually apply creams or lotions. Silk absorbs these products much less than other fabrics. This allows your skincare products to penetrate deeply and be more effective.

4. Silk soothes itching

Silk reduces inflammation. It glides gently over the skin and soothes sensitive and irritated skin. Furthermore, thanks to its thermoregulatory properties, silk cools itchy areas and reduces sweating, which, like heat, tends to exacerbate itching.

5. Silk helps treat skin imperfections

Silk comes from the cocoon that protects the Bombyx mori silkworm. It is composed of two proteins with miraculous properties:

  • fibroin is the silk filament: it’s used in cosmetics because it provides softness, suppleness, and hydration
  • sericin acts like a glue that holds the fibroin together in the form of a cocoon: it has healing and purifying properties. In fact, sericin is also used in surgery to accelerate healing and in the treatment of burns.

Silk is a 100% natural beauty treatment. The silk pillowcase is its signature product. It’s important to note that “For 95% of people with acne, the face is the area most commonly affected by acne. ” (Source: ameli.fr). So, to best protect your face and avoid irritating it while you sleep, opt for a silk pillowcase: For 43% of people with acne, the back is also affected. As for eczema, although it can also affect the face, it tends to appear mainly in skin folds (neck, inner elbows, back of the knees, hands, wrists, and ankles). To help relieve your skin problems, we recommend our 100% mulberry silk bedding.

FAQ

Are silk pillowcases better for acne-prone or atopic skin?
Yes. Their smooth surface minimizes friction and irritation, while their low absorbency helps lock in moisture and skincare products. When combined with a gentle skincare routine (a non-stripping cleanser and regular pillowcase changes), they provide a healthier environment for skin prone to acne or atopic dermatitis.
Can silk soothe eczema (and psoriasis)?
Silk, which is naturally soft and temperature-regulating, reduces friction and sweating—two factors that exacerbate redness and itching. It can therefore help soothe the discomfort associated with eczema (and sometimes psoriasis). This is not a substitute for dermatological care: if you experience a flare-up, consult your doctor.
Does sleeping on silk enhance the effectiveness of nighttime skincare products?
Yes. Silk absorbs creams and serums less than cotton, allowing the active ingredients to remain on the skin longer. To maximize effectiveness, let your skincare products absorb for a few minutes before going to bed and wash your pillowcase regularly.
Is silk hypoallergenic?
Yes. Its natural, smooth, and dense fiber minimizes the retention of allergens (dust mites, dust, pollen). Choose 100% mulberry silk and, if possible, certified silk (such as Oeko-Tex®) to ensure it’s free of unwanted substances.
Is silk antibacterial?
Silk is naturally less conducive to bacterial growth than more absorbent materials. However, it is no substitute for good hygiene: wash your pillowcase regularly (and change it frequently) to maintain a clean and healthy environment for your skin.
Does silk promote better sleep quality, and therefore healthier skin?
Yes, indirectly. Silk reduces friction, helps regulate temperature, and improves nighttime comfort—all of which are conditions that promote skin regeneration. For long-lasting, healthier-looking skin, combine it with a suitable skincare routine and a healthy lifestyle.
